Team Charter

1)    Team Goals/ Purpose:

To build a portable navigation device for a visually impaired user that details their location of campus and allows them to be directed through a path to their destination on campus.

2)    Scope of the project:

This project will create a new device for GMU’s Fairfax campus that offers navigational services to the visually impaired.  It has an estimated budget of $1500-$2000 and will be the result of two school semester’s worth of design and testing.

3)    Duration and time commitment:

Team meets:

a)    Monday: 1:30PM – 4:30PM

b)    Thursday: Meet with mentor, Dr. Ikonomidou (5:15PM – end)

c)    Thursday: 4:20PM – 5:15PM & end of meeting with Dr. Ikonomidou until needed

d)    Friday: After 492 as needed

4)     Members and roles:

Daniel Nguyen: Team Leader

    • Obtain components necessary for device
    • Integrate knowledge of robotics and GPS for navigation
    • Assist in the assembly of device

Jennifer Le: Team Manager

    • Research options for the components of the device
    • Assist in the assembly of device
    • Make sure team is on task and meets weekly goals

Marissa Arager

    • Research options for the components of the device
    • Assist in the assembly of device
    • Keep up with scheduled meetings

5)     Desired End Product:

To produce a navigation device for the user that will be, portable, easy to use, autonomous, light weight and inform them of their current position and what buildings are surrounding them.

6)     Deliverables:

Visually impaired individuals will have a device that will navigate them through campus and by incorporating and updating the system coordinate mapping to other university campuses or locations, the device would not be limited on location and can potentially aid in navigating individuals who are not visually impaired too.

7)      Supporting Resources:

          a)    Project Advisors: Dr.Ikonomidou and Dr.Peixoto

b)    Component/parts manuals/specification pages: GPS, wireless triangulation, bluetooth, voice recognition, arduino board, accelerometer, and digital compass.
